Several beachfront restaurants serve up local dishes, with fresh seafood being the highlight. Try caldero murciano, a traditional rice dish made with fish and garlic, or grilled sardines straight from the barbecue. Yum!

For outdoor enthusiasts, the nearby Sierra de las Moreras offers scenic hiking trails with panoramic views of the coastline and the surrounding mountains. It is an absolutely stunning area to explore.

If you’re visiting in November, don’t miss this colorful local festival. It involves a pilgrimage from Mazarrón to Bolnuevo and includes food, music, and religious processions—offering a deep insight into local culture and tradition.

One of the most iconic and surreal landmarks on Spain’s Costa Cálida is the Erosiones de Bolnuevo, commonly referred to as the Bolnuevo Sand Sculptures. This natural wonder is a breathtaking example of how time, wind, and water can work together to shape the landscape into something extraordinary. It is a must see!
What Are the Erosiones de Bolnuevo?
The Erosiones are a group of soft sandstone formations, sculpted by centuries of erosion from wind and rain. Composed of clay-rich sedimentary rock, the formations are highly susceptible to the elements, which gives them their unusual and often gravity-defying shapes. Towering mushroom-like structures and layered columns rise dramatically from the ground, creating a landscape that feels more like a desert scene from Arizona than a Mediterranean beach town. They really are very cool, and children will find them fascinating.
These formations are sometimes called the “Ciudad Encantada de Bolnuevo” (the Enchanted City of Bolnuevo) due to their otherworldly appearance and the sense of magic they inspire in visitors.
Visiting the Site
- Location: The Erosiones are located right at the edge of the village, just a short walk from the main beach, and are completely free to visit.
- Best Time to Visit: Early morning and late afternoon offer the most dramatic lighting for photography. Sunset is particularly beautiful, with the golden hour casting warm tones across the sandy surface.
